As we rest and recover from the wonderful and tiring trip we made last week, dystonia remains my constant companion. I am very thankful for the blessing of Deep Brain Stimulation surgery, and even for the dystonia itself, at times. However, there is no doubting the fact that this companion adds challenges to my life on a daily basis. Learning to cope with issues is ever changing and varied, depending on the particular stresses in my life and how my body reacts to them.
Many people remain undiagnosed with dystonia, as it is a little known and even less understood illness, even in the medical community. Those who are close to me have learned much the past couple of years regarding dystonia and other movement disorders, along with me. I do my best to educate people I come in contact with and, in that vein, I would encourage anyone who reads this post to visit the Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia and Parkinson Foundation, Inc. website. It is very informative and educational regarding these two illnesses which are often closely related. (The one medication which has worked for me has actually been a Parkinson's medication, as a matter of fact.)
Please feel free to share this information, particularly with anyone you might suspect of having dystonia. It could make a huge difference in their life.
